While the Red Bull Music Academy was investigating Tokyo as a next possible location for their famed educational program, the tragedy of the March 11 Tohoku quake and tsunami struck. Their response was a series of free events and a large-format A3-sized publication.
Reflecting on the meaning of ‘play,’ the identity was born out of musical notation that is rearranged for pure amusement. Taking the same spirited approach in a contrasting direction, the newsprint layout adheres to a strict block-based grid, in reference to sequencer software used in modern music production. This forms a canvas to render visual rhythms and cadences within the flow of text and images.
